Queen's Speech was a Lost Opprotunity - Brooke

12.00.00am GMT Wed 26th Nov 2003

Commenting on the Queen's Speech today, Annette Brooke MP said:

"This was a wasted opportunity to really make a difference for the people of Poole and Mid Dorset. Most importantly, there were few attempts to de-centralise from Whitehall, and the Council Tax remains firmly, and unfairly, in place."

"The Prime Minister's refusal to back down on top-up fees will have a devastating impact on the ambitions of many young people. The government should be encouraging learning not charging for it."

"Nevertheless, I do welcome the introduction of a Domestic Violence Bill, as well as a Crime and Victims Bill. A new Children's Commissioner for England is also good news for the protection of children and their rights."

"I certainly welcome the plans to establish a Pensions Protection Fund - such measures are well overdue, as are some of the proposals in the Housing Bill."

"On Constitutional issues, I look forward to seeing more details on the proposals to establish a Supreme Court and reforming the Judicial Appointments System and the abolition of the Lord Chancellor. These proposals have long been Liberal Democrat policy."
