MP hopes mass lobby of Parliament will keep Trade Justice at the top of the Government's agenda11.02.59am GMT Thu 3rd Nov 2005
Commenting on the mass lobby for trade justice held yesterday in Westminster, Annette Brooke MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole, said: "This mass lobby is an excellent way of keeping trade justice high up on the Government's agenda and I'm delighted that so many people from the Mid Dorset and Poole area came to London to pledge their support for the campaign. "The G8 countries must not let the consensus that has been developed through Make Poverty History and Live8 slip away. "It is vital that both developed and developing countries liberalise their markets if we are to eradicate poverty in the developing world and to protect the environment."
Andrew George MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow International Development Secretary, said: "Although effective aid programmes and debt relief help to make poverty history, they can create dependency too. "Fair trade rules which open markets but protect less developed countries from exploitation will provide the strong foundation needed for sustainable economic development."
