Government Failure on Child Poverty Unsurprising - Brooke

6.00.00pm GMT Thu 9th Mar 2006

Commenting on the announcement today that the government has missed its interim target to cut child poverty by a quarter by 2005, Liberal Democrat children spokesperson, Annette Brooke MP, said:

"It is not surprising the Government has missed its target. Relying so heavily on one strategy, getting mothers back to work, inevitably only tackles part of the problems and possibly creates more by forcing mothers back to work.

"This strategy, carried through in the current Childcare Bill, ignores the 1.2 million workless families, where parents may have disabilities or simply not be able to move swiftly into work.

"The fiascos with tax credits and the Child Support Agency have hit poorer families particularly hard."
